St. George Georgetown

Ground was broken for a new Catholic church in May 1902 at Apple and Plum Streets. The church was originally named the Assumption of Mary and was dedicated on October 1, 1902. That building is now the Apple Street Christian Church.
The cornerstone for the new church was laid on May 18, 1952 and the church was blessed by Archbishop Alter on October 15, 1952.
The church was originally staffed by Benedictine priests. They served the parish community for 54 years until leaving in 1954.
In 1983 a major addition to the church was built that included classrooms, a social hall and a bell tower.
